NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP TRAINING CONFERENCE

What is the National Youth Leadership Training Conference?

The National Youth Leadership Training Conference is a seven day, outdoor training experience for Boy Scout youth leaders. The course design and content has been developed by the National BSA Council and is offered by your local council as a supplement to the Junior Leader Training provided by the Scoutmasters within their troops.

What is the purpose of National Youth Leadership Training?

Scouts at the NYLT conference learn the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. The course schedule parallels the program month of a troop. Three model troop meetings, a patrol leaders' council meeting in the round followed by daily PLC operating sessions, an instructional campfire, and troop operation using the patrol method create a productive troop program. Important leadership skills such as communication, developing goals, planning, and making ethical decisions are all part of the program.

When and where is the NYLT program held?

The NYLT program is held each summer in early August at the Holcomb Valley Scout Reservation. Please check with your Scoutmaster for the exact dates

How to apply?

All applicants must be of First Class rank, 13 years old by August 1 and have their Scoutmaster's recommendation. The Scoutmaster may nominate up to eight candidates from his troop . They should be in a troop leadership position currently or expect to be in a leadership position within the next twelve months. The Scouts should also have some camping, hiking and cooking skills as the conference is conducted in a camp setting. After the Scoutmaster Nomination is received, an application package will be sent to each candidate. The Scout and the Scoutmaster will fill out the application package and return it to the Scout Center. Please discuss this program with your Scoutmaster if you would like your Scout to attend.

Scoutmasters:

A nomination packet is sent out to each Scoutmaster who is registered in the San Gabriel Valley Council at the end of January. If you have not yet received this packet, you may download it here (Scoutmaster Nomination Packet).
